Don’t Make These Common Mistakes When Buying a Motorhome

I call it a motorhome. You may call it a recreational vehicle. Some of you may even refer to it as a winnebago. I’m sure you all know exactly what I’m referring to, so I’m going to keep using the term motorhome. (Besides, I hate the word ‘winnebago’.)

There’s no denying that a motorhome is a pretty adventurous purchase. And no, that’s not a pun on the word “adventure” in a motorhome context. I’m literally referring to the fact that buying or renting one can be very tricky. It’s a big commitment, and many people make mistakes when they’re looking for the motorhome for them.

Here are some of the most common and egregious mistakes that people make when shopping for motorhomes. Make sure you don’t make them!

Being afraid to look at converted motorhomes

A converted motorhome is, literally, a vehicle that has been converted into a motorhome. Big vans, small trucks, and even minibuses have been converted into motorhomes. There’s this common misconception that they’re of lower quality and cost a lot more. But if you dismiss conversions from your browsing, then you could be missing out on the perfect motorhome for you. Reports of them being more expensive than regular motorhomes are largely unfounded. It mostly depends on the materials used during the conversion, as well as the difficulty of the conversion.

Not considering potential size problems

Perhaps you’re buying or renting a motorhome for a specific journey. Well, how much do you know about the roads in your chosen destination? Are they large? Are they narrow and windy, as they often are off the beaten track? Are there plenty of low bridges? You need to consider these things when looking at motorhomes. You don’t want to end up buying a motorhome that’s way too big for maneuvering in the desired location. Otherwise, you’re just going to end up getting stuck or otherwise unable to progress.

Paying extortionate amounts for insurance

Here’s another misconception about motorhomes. A lot of people believe that you have to pay for very expensive, specialized motorhome insurance. Specialized insurance is useful, for sure, and sometimes it’s needed. But you’re not as limited in your choices as you may believe.
