In The Spotlight: A First Look At The Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake
We all know that the Jaguar XF is one of those executive British saloon cars that is probably one of the most stylish, comfortable and powerful cars you could ever drive, so Jaguar would have a pretty tough job on its hands to build on that. Yet, they have managed to do so, and the result is the company’s first high-performance luxury estate car: the Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake!
The car will be on sale in the United Kingdom very soon at a cost of around £83k brand new! This rear-wheel drive estate car is a Jaguar that every car enthusiast (and parent) would sell their grandmothers for, and then some!
It features a highly-tuned and supercharged 5.0-litre V8 powerplant under the bonnet, and has a maximum power output of 542 brake horsepower; 39 brake horsepower more than the same engine used in the XFR saloon.
Apparently the reason why this model has this extra power is down to some modifications to the ECU (engine control unit) map, intake and exhaust system.
The British car manufacturer has purposely limited the top speed of this monster to 186 mph, but if you were looking to buy an estate car that offered great fuel economy then you might want to get a Ford Mondeo estate instead, because this bad boy is very thirsty and only offers 22 miles per gallon.
It comes with an automatic transmission with eight forward gears, and benefits from the Quickshift technology that was first unveiled to the world through the F-Type. I won’t bore you with all of the technical details, but all you need to know is that there is some clever electronic wizardry going on with this transmission so that you are always in the best gear!
Another thing that has been adjusted from its older brother the XFR saloon is the suspension setup. Because of the longer body, the springs and shock absorbers have been considerably stiffened, and changes have been made to the adaptive damping and dynamic stability control systems.
This is something of a special car, and you aren’t likely to find these awesome 20-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli rubber on a used Jaguar XF, for example! You will have to admit, these wheels do look pretty sexy on this car, and complement the contours of its bodywork rather well.
What’s it like to drive?
In a word: awesome! This car has so much power under the bonnet that you can quite easily end up spinning those wheels, but the great thing about the engine electronics on the Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake is that it will quickly and efficiently shift into the correct gear according to the driving conditions.
Anyone who drives this motor will have a massive grin on their face as they hear the roar of that supercharged V8 engine!
The only downsides to this beast are that the stiffened suspension can sometimes make the car ‘tramline’ on dodgy roads, and it perhaps isn’t as refined as some of Audi’s efforts, but overall this car is definitely a must for any Jaguar enthusiast!
