Understand the Problem

The first thing you’re going to want to do is understand where the problem arises from. In most instances, it is due to a traumatic experience. Such as a car crash. If this is the case, then you may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s worth talking to your doctor and seeing if you can get some counselling. Sometimes, talking about the trauma can be all it takes to get you driving again. That doesn’t work for everyone, however. Whichever route you go down, you do need to understand the issue. Understand how phobias work. And understand what you can do to change your mindset. Write yourself a list of all the reasons you don’t like driving. Write another one that details how driving makes you feel. These are good starting points, to help you understand the problem better.

Talk to Someone

We’ve already briefly touched on talking to someone in our previous point. However, it doesn’t always have to be a counsellor or doctor. Sometimes, all we need is a chat with a friend or family member. It would be extremely helpful to find someone who has also been in a car accident if that’s what the issue is. They will be able to tell you how they got behind the wheel again. You can seek the advice from a professional in phobias. They understand exactly what it is that makes a person nervous. They can then give you practical steps to help combat that anxiety. CBT or DBT are different types of therapy which may be useful.

Practising

Once you’ve recognised the issue and have worked on ways to combat the anxiety, you can then move onto practising again. It’s a good idea to take a few driving lessons before you attempt to drive on your own again. If the fear is too much, you could always try a driver training simulator. This is just like driving your own car, but without any of the potential risk. Make sure you get an instructor or friend to help you practise driving again. They’ll be able to take over if you’re not feeling very well.

The main thing you need to do is get behind the wheel again. The longer you leave it, the harder it will become to deal with. Use the tips above and tackle this fear head on. Make sure you talk to a doctor if you find yourself experiencing severe anxiety symptoms. It may be that you need some further help and advice.
