How To Tell When Your Car Is About To Die

You don’t have to be a mechanic to understand when your car is having problems. But, you do need to know how to spot the signs. Vehicles of any kind go through a lot over their lifetime, but some have it worse than others.

Careless drivers, lack of attention, and an avoidance of servicing can all take their toll. And, when that occurs, you don’t want to be in the car driving at 70mph when things go awry.

Your best bet is t keep an eye – and ear – out for trouble. Here are a few things to think about that will help you spot the signs of a serious problem.

You are always buying spare parts

Do you know the guys at your local spare parts store by their first names? Unless you are seriously into your modifications, it’s probably best to consider getting a new vehicle. Don’t get us wrong – knowing where to get salvage auto parts at a low price is a good thing, in general. But, if you are forking out for replacements on a regular basis, it’s a sure sign that you are wasting your money. As a rough guide, we would suggest by the time you have spent half the car’s value on spares, it might not be worth your time.

You hear strange sounds

Every driver would do well to listen to their ears more often. They can tell you a lot about the state of your vehicle. It doesn’t take long to learn all the different sounds your car makes. The second you hear something strange, there’s a good chance something is up. And, if it gets louder or more frequent, there is going to be big trouble on the way. Make sure you check out anything you hear that seems out of the ordinary. In many cases, it might be a minor fix that costs you peanuts. But, you never know, it might just save your life.

Your engine eats oil

Most people are sensible enough to check for oil leaks every so often. But, if you are topping up your levels often and there are no visible signs, it could signify a more serious problem. It’s a sure sign that your engine isn’t working properly, and is needing an enormous amount of extra oil to do its job. As soon as this starts happening, your engine will be working double time – and that’s only going to end in tears. It could be an expensive fix, but it will prevent an accident when you are driving at high speed.

Your brakes squeal

We don’t need to tell you about the importance of your brakes. But, as soon as you hear them start to squeak or whine, you must get them looked at by a professional eye. Without a once over, there is an increasing risk of an accident every time you drive your car. And, the consequences of that could be just about as severe as it gets.
Look after your car, and it will take care of you. We hope this guide helps you spot serious problems before they cause you harm.
