Is 2016 The Year Of The Mud Truck?

In a world that is constantly seeking novelty, there always seems to be another trend just around the corner. This year perhaps the sport of mud trucking will make it onto the international stage.

This amazing sport reminds me a little bit of those crazy, 10,000 horsepower tractors trying to pull heavy objects on YouTube. Rather like, in fact, the tractor that managed to pull a truck on a sled, and made it look easy.

But the sport of mud trucking is fascinating; a kind of throwback to the All-American drag race. But, of course, the trucks aren’t competing on smooth asphalt. They’re competing on the muddiest, boggiest terrain you can imagine.

This spectator sport features some of the most jaw-dropping stunts too. You can watch as some of the most powerful trucks in the world slide and squirm their way out of deep muddy pits, and race each other over waterlogged bogs. Watch the mud splatter everywhere as their wheels desperately spin in an attempt to gain elusive traction. Watch as they hurtle towards jumps and take off, sometimes thirty feet into the air.

Now that the sport regularly draws attendances in the thousands it looks as if things are about to go big for mud trucking. In 2009, the brainchild of Brian and Lisa Austin, Mud Truck TV, launched. To begin with it was a simple half hour show only aired in Arkansas. But it has since grown so much that it’s now aired on the nationwide Untamed Sports TV Network.

Then, last year, the sport attracted huge crowds to an event in Rutland, Vermont. This show hosted trucks with up to 2,000 horsepower. Brave drivers drove them through muddy pits and flew over huge jumps. In it’s tenth year the show has never been more popular.

If you want to have a go at the sport yourself there are mud trucks for sale all over the US. Racers are now showing up at events all over the country.

Every year, the parks get sicker. And every year the course changes, just to keep things nice and challenging.

The sport is also splintering into different styles. If you’re one of those people who is a bit happy go lucky, you can compete in a freestyle round. If you’ve got more of a drag racing pedigree, you can try a side-by-side race. This is certainly one that will get the crowd on their feet. But if you’re a daredevil, then there really is only one competition for you – the long jump.

Just make sure that if you do decide to enter one of these events and make 2016 the year of mud trucking, you make your truck safe. Make sure that your truck has a roll cage, and that you are wearing a HANS device, or Head And Neck Safety device. Also, make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in the driver’s compartment at all times. Finally, ensure that your truck has a kill switch. This means that if there is a problem with the engine or drivetrain, it can be shut down immediately so that you remain unharmed.
