The Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Around 88,000 motorcycle accidents occur on US highways each year. There are many different causes for this, and we’ll mention some of them in a moment. It’s important that you understand the roads are not as safe as they used to be. In the past, there were fewer cars around, and so motorcyclists had a reasonable chance of avoiding injury. The same cannot be said today.

The most common causes of motorcycle accidents today

Poor weather conditions

Rain, hail and snow can make roads very slippery, which is why motorcyclists are always advised to check weather reports before heading out on the roads.

Other drivers

Most motorcycle accidents involving other drivers occur because they’ve failed to use turning signals. Your indicators are there for a reason!

Lane splitting

That is where a motorcyclist travels between two lanes in the hope of beating the traffic. Unfortunately, it’s very dangerous, and many people are injured that way.

Ignoring traffic signs

Signs and traffic lights are there for a reason. Just because you’re riding a motorbike, that does not mean you can ignore them.

Most modern bikes can reach high speeds very quickly, and so it’s easy to get carried away. Speed limits are set for your safety. Pay attention to them.

Road defects

While our local authorities try their best to ensure the roads are in good condition, potholes and other defects can present real issues for motorcyclists.

Road rage

Becoming angry with other motorists because they’ve cut you up or something similar often results in a lack of attention paid to the road.

At the end of the day, whether or not you choose to ride a motorcycle is your own decision. However, we’re sure you all agree it’s good to know the facts.

Stay safe!
